* WHAT...For the Beach Hazards Statement, dangerous rip currents
and breaking waves due to elevated surf. For the Coastal Flood
Advisory, moderate coastal flooding expected. For the High Surf
Advisory, large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet with dangerous
rip currents.
* WHERE...Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County
Beaches, Malibu Coast and Los Angeles County Beaches. Focused
across exposed south facing coasts.
* WHEN...For the Beach Hazards Statement, through 5 AM Monday. For
the Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Advisory, from 5 AM
Monday to 5 PM PDT Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Moderate flooding of sea water is likely over some
vulnerable low-lying coastal areas, especially around the time
of high tide, including over beach parking lots, bike paths, and
harbor walkways. Moderate to locally significant beach erosion
is likely. Very localized damage possible to most vulnerable
areas. There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip
currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large
breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and
rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Areas of most concern are Avalon, Long
Beach (Peninsula and Belmont Shore). While the surf will likely
be smaller than Marie (from earlier this month), the lingering
erosion effects enhances the vulnerabilities for locally more
significant coastal flooding.
What you should do
Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Do
NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, or stay
near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in
such conditions, stay off the rocks.
